A new contender: CMPlayer: http://cmplayer.github.io/
Fully featured.
Also, about it: http://www.noobslab.com/2014/01/cmplayer-is-powerful-minimal-light.html
(The skin displayed at that link was buggy in Xubuntu 14.04, “simple” skin worked fine)
CMPlayer is even better now, it’s been renamed to Bomi.
And it’s definitely better than every single player listed here, at least as far as image and upscaling quality goes (don’t know any other Linux player that has proper upscaling algorithms available)
Also since it’s mpv based it has some epic codec support, can usually pull off playing broken and corrupt files, it’s actively being developed, and the only player I know that can really compete with it is K-Lite Codec Pack on Media Player Classic in Windows using it’s finest MadVR renderer with well configured settings; but the latter is actually hard to configure, in bomi you just need to click 2 or 3 buttons and bam you have nice lanzcos upscaling. It’s truly a marvel by now.
